‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Episode 5 Ending Explained: Who Killed the Gold Cloaks? What Happens to Helaena and Alicent?
Warning: Major spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 below.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 delivers one of the season’s darkest chapters, ending with two shocking cliffhangers that dramatically reshape the Dance of the Dragons. The episode not only reveals a brutal massacre inside King’s Landing but also leaves Alicent Hightower and Helaena Targaryen trapped within the hidden passages of the Red Keep.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the ending, who orchestrated the killings, and how the HBO series differs from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Who Killed the Gold Cloaks?
The biggest revelation comes when Daemon Targaryen discovers the bodies of several Gold Cloaks, including Ser Luthor Largent, the Head of the City Watch. The victims have been murdered, disemboweled, and grotesquely displayed in what the killers call a “Feast for Traitors.”
The episode reveals that Ormund Hightower is secretly behind the coordinated attacks.
Rather than launching an open assault against Rhaenyra’s forces, Ormund has adopted a more calculated strategy. He is secretly funding loyalists inside King’s Landing with newly minted gold coins bearing Prince Daeron’s claim to the Iron Throne.
His plan extends far beyond assassinating soldiers.
As Rhaenyra grows increasingly paranoid, her Gold Cloaks have become more violent toward ordinary citizens. Every attack on civilians fuels resentment among the people of King’s Landing. Each murdered Gold Cloak then provokes even harsher retaliation from Daemon and Rhaenyra, creating a vicious cycle of fear, violence, and instability.
Instead of defeating Team Black on the battlefield, Ormund is undermining Rhaenyra’s rule from within by turning the city’s population against her.
How Does Ser Luthor Largent Die in Fire & Blood?
The HBO series significantly changes Ser Luthor’s fate.
In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Ser Luthor is never murdered in a secret massacre. Instead, he remains one of Rhaenyra’s most feared and ruthless commanders throughout much of her reign.
According to the book, his brutal treatment of the smallfolk eventually catches up with him. During a violent uprising in King’s Landing, Ser Luthor allegedly tramples a young girl beneath his horse. Enraged civilians drag him from the saddle before beating and stabbing him to death.
Although the show changes the circumstances, the underlying theme remains the same: Ser Luthor’s cruelty ultimately leads to his downfall.
What Happens to Alicent and Helaena?
Elsewhere in the episode, Alicent Hightower and Helaena discover a hidden passage connected to Rhaenyra’s former bedroom.
Believing they’ve found a path to freedom, the pair venture into the secret tunnel. However, their escape quickly turns into a nightmare.

The passage ends at a dead end, and after Helaena accidentally drops her lantern, the corridor is plunged into complete darkness. Alicent then realizes the door behind them has locked shut, leaving both women trapped inside the walls of the Red Keep.
The episode ends before revealing whether anyone knows where they are.
Will Alicent and Helaena Die in the Secret Passages?
Probably not.
This storyline does not exist in Fire & Blood, making it an original invention for HBO’s adaptation.
Several possibilities could explain how they escape:
- Rhaenyra or Mysaria may discover they’re missing and investigate.
- Daemon could search the castle’s hidden tunnels while investigating the Gold Cloak murders.
- Someone familiar with the Red Keep’s secret passages may eventually locate them before it’s too late.
While the cliffhanger creates enormous tension, it appears unlikely that either character will die inside the hidden corridors.
What Happens to Helaena in the Books?
Helaena’s ultimate fate in Fire & Blood is one of the most tragic in the Dance of the Dragons.
Following the horrifying death of her young son Maelor, Helaena falls into overwhelming despair. Unable to recover from the loss, she eventually takes her own life.
The HBO series appears to be reshaping parts of this storyline. With Helaena’s pregnancy receiving increased attention, the writers may introduce a different tragedy involving her unborn child while still preserving the emotional weight of her eventual fate.
Exactly how closely the series follows Martin’s version remains unknown.
What Happens to Alicent?
Unlike many major players in the civil war, Alicent survives the Dance of the Dragons in Fire & Blood.
She lives beyond the conflict but never truly recovers from the devastation surrounding her family. A few years later, she dies during the deadly outbreak known as the Winter Fever, a disease that claims thousands of lives across Westeros.
Whether HBO keeps this ending or introduces another major departure remains to be seen.
