Why Was Daeron Forced to Kill Leo?

Daeron Targaryen’s first act of killing isn’t born out of personal hatred—it’s a lesson in power.

After the Hightower army occupies Tumbleton, tensions quickly erupt when one of Ormund Hightower’s soldiers harasses Kat, the wife of blacksmith Hugh Hammer. Leo steps in to defend his family, sparking a confrontation that threatens military discipline.

Although Ormund publicly punishes the offending soldier, he ultimately decides Leo must die. The execution serves a larger purpose than simple justice. Ormund wants Daeron to abandon his youthful compassion and embrace the ruthless mindset expected of a future military leader.

By forcing Daeron to carry out the sentence, Ormund ensures the young prince crosses a psychological line that can never be undone. The moment symbolizes Daeron’s transformation from an innocent royal into a participant in the brutal realities of civil war.

Did Daemon Kill Rhaena?

Despite what Daemon initially suggests, the answer is no.

During his journey through the Vale, Daemon discovers that the mysterious rider of the wild dragon Sheepstealer is actually his daughter, Rhaena Targaryen. Rather than revealing her secret to Queen Rhaenyra, he chooses to protect her.

To maintain the deception, Daemon kills an unidentified shepherd and burns the body beyond recognition before presenting the charred remains as proof that Sheepstealer’s rider is dead.

The grisly trick allows Rhaena to remain hidden while avoiding immediate suspicion from Rhaenyra and the rest of the Black council.

Whose Skull Does Daemon Bring to Rhaenyra?

The burned skull Daemon presents does not belong to Rhaena.

Instead, it belongs to the unfortunate shepherd Daemon murders to create a convincing illusion. The deception is designed to make everyone believe the dragon’s rider has been eliminated, allowing Rhaena to continue living in secret alongside Sheepstealer.

However, Mysaria quickly senses that Daemon isn’t telling the full truth. Her suspicions suggest this secret may not stay buried for long.

How the Story Differs From George R.R. Martin’s Book

Readers of Fire & Blood will notice a major change in HBO’s adaptation.

In George R.R. Martin’s novel, the wild dragon Sheepstealer is bonded with Nettles, a lowborn dragonseed who earns the dragon’s trust by feeding it sheep. She later fights alongside Daemon during the Dance of the Dragons.

The television series instead gives much of Nettles’ storyline to Rhaena Targaryen, creating a more personal conflict between Daemon, Rhaenyra, and their daughter. This creative decision significantly reshapes Daemon’s motivations and raises the emotional stakes for future episodes.

What Episode 4 Means for the War Ahead

Episode 4 marks a turning point for multiple characters. Daeron loses his innocence under Ormund’s harsh guidance, while Daemon risks everything to shield his daughter from political consequences.

Both decisions are rooted in loyalty—but they also introduce dangerous secrets that could have devastating consequences as the Dance of the Dragons continues.

With trust beginning to fracture among both the Greens and the Blacks, the choices made in this episode are likely to echo throughout the remainder of the season.
